Eindelijk is het zover, vanavond om 18u werd de definitieve verkoopakte getekend zodat we (eindelijk) ons eigen huisje hebben. Uiteraard leuk voor ons gezien onze lange zoektocht maar ook meer dan nodig gezien de nakende gezinsuitbreiding ;)

Vorig weekend waren we al begonnen met het wat bij te schilderen (big up to E & haar ma, geen slecht woord over mijn schoonmoeder) en ook al het doenbare reeds te verhuizen (lees: bijna alles wat ik alleen kan dragen). Rest ons nu enkel nog de grote zaken te verhuizen en als alles dit weekend vlot verloopt slapen we normaal vanaf 1 oktober nog steeds in ons oude bed maar dan wel in ons 'nieuwe' huis...

Dus beste vrienden, mocht het jullie passen, steek eens over, jullie zijn meer dan welkom om er ne goeie (of meer dan een) te komen drinken chez nous.

MSTERDAM - Door illegale prijsafspraken tussen brouwers hebben Nederlandse bierdrinkers jarenlang 1 euro te veel betaald voor een kratje pils. Van 1996 tot 1999 hebben Heineken, Bavaria, Grolsch en het Belgische InBev met hun bierkartel in totaal ongeveer 400 miljoen euro verdiend. De Europese Commissie te Brussel beboette de brouwers in april voor 273 miljoen euro. InBev ging vrijuit omdat de Belgische brouwer de andere drie had 'verlinkt'. De Nederlandse brouwers zijn direct na het horen van de boete in hoger beroep gegaan.

Sedert gisteren hebben we de sleutels van onze 'nieuwe' woonst & in afwachting van tekenen van de definitieve akte op 26 sept, kunnen we dan ook beginnen met de nodige werkjes vooraleer we definitief zullen verhuizen ergens in de 1ste helft van oktober...

Binnenkort dan ook house warming party bij ons, eindelijk kunnen wij dan ook eens meer dan 1 koppel vragen zonder onze hele inboedel te moeten verhuizen...

De laatste jaren is het triestig gesteld met de kwaliteit van de langspeelfilms uit de V.S. Vroeger was er een mix van interessante blockbusters (type Die Hard) en minder commerciële films (type The Usual Suspects) die wel aansloegen bij een groot publiek. Nu krijgen we X-Men 1,2,3 Spiderman 1 tot 3 en de Star Wars draken voorgeschoteld afgewisseld met de zoveelste slasher/gore movie (geeuw!)

Wil je goeie VS acteurs zien, interessante dialogen en originele scripts dan stem je beter af op één van de series van de onafhankelijke producenten (HBO, FX ).
The Shield en The Wire behoren tot het beste wat ik de laatste jaren heb gezien (persoonlijk ben ik geen fan van The Sopranos, teveel Analyze This, te weinig Goodfellas)

The Shield bevat iets meer actie dan The Wire maar beide series zitten vol met echte personages die je na een paar afleveringen gaat beschouwen als je persoonlijke vrienden, aartsvijanden of maitresses

This has got to be the coolest graph I've seen on NBA stats. On the vertical axis the number of points per game are shown for all the nba players with a sufficient amount of playin time. The horizontal axis shows all the other contributions by a player (other than points) , added together and divided by the number of games. There is also a color code on the graph.
When you look at the outliers on the graph, you get a good idea of which players are special . Check out Garnett for instance.

Leterme werd twee weken geleden de populairste politicus van Vlaanderen en de Ieperling mag dan wel gezien worden als een voorbeeld van 'goed bestuur'maar in zijn eigen 'backyard' of 'hood' hebben ze nog niet veel gezien van zijn goe bestier.
Vandaag verscheen de nieuwe rangschikking (aanslagjaar 2005) van de rijkste en armste gemeenten van het land .
Mesen, Lo-Reninge staan opnieuw in de top tien en zijn de armste gemeenten van Vlaanderen. Schaam op jou, Yves. Er staat trouwens maar één WestVlaamse stad/gemeente in de Top 10 rijkste (Koksijde niet Knokke !),

The results show that the child mortality rate, based on the number of children dying before the age of five per 1,000 live births averaged over a four-year period, was below five in the top six countries - Sweden at 3.25, followed by Iceland (3.75) Norway (4.00) Denmark (4.25) Japan (4.50) and Finland (4.75). The bottom six were New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland (all 6.0), UK and Canada (6.5) and the US (8.0).

The researchers also calculated income inequality in each country by comparing the income share of the top 20 per cent with that of the bottom 40 per cent. The ratio was lowest in Luxembourg, Japan, Finland and Norway, where the income of the top earners 20 per cent was only 1.5 times greater than the bottom 40 per cent. But the ratio was 2.5 in the UK and 2.8 in the US."There is a very strong association between income inequality and under-five child mortality among the wealthier OECD [Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development] countries,'' said the report.

David Collison, who led the study, said: "All the Anglo-American countries do pretty badly. It is clear that inequality is linked to the poor position of the UK and elsewhere."

Air pollution in major cities is potentially more damaging to health than being exposed to the radioactive fallout of an atomic bomb, according to a report published earlier this week.
The study suggests that high levels of urban air pollution cut life expectancy by more than the radiation exposure of emergency workers sent into the 19-mile exclusion zone around the Chernobyl disaster.
Although 30 people died immediately in the two explosions at Chernobyl and up to 16,000 deaths have been linked to the radiation plume that spread across Europe, the research found that moving from Inverness to London could have a worse effect on your health than moving to Chernobyl.

Jim Smith, a scientist at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, who carried out the research, assessed the health risks faced by those at Chernobyl directly after the explosion and those who set up home in the exclusion zone afterwards. He compared them with air pollution, obesity and passive and active smoking.
He concluded the Chernobyl group absorbed radiation equivalent to more than the amount emitted during 1,200 chest x-rays, which was likely to cause one extra death in a hundred by increasing the risk of cancer.
The health risks associated with air pollution and passive smoking appear more severe. Pollution in central London increased mortality due to heart disease by 2.8 per cent compared with Inverness, Britain's least polluted city, while living with a smoker increases mortality by 1.7 per cent, the study found.
Writing in the journal BMC Public Health, Dr Smith said: "It is well known that radiation can potentially cause fatal cancers in people, even at relatively low doses. But our understandable fear of radiation needs to be placed in the context of other risks. The study follows a report last month from The Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, which said air pollution was responsible for 24,000 premature deaths in Britain every year. Sir John Lawton, chairman of the commission, said the Government had consistently failed to tackle rising levels of chemicals in the atmosphere of cities. Other findings showed that women living in areas of higher pollution were at greater risk of heart disease and death, while children living within 500 metres of motorways suffered more permanent lung damage and lower life expectancy, probably because of their greater exposure to pollutants in vehicle fumes.

I evade my personal responsibility for the things I choose to do. I blame the government, the oil companies, George Bush, the economy, the wealthy and anybody else I can think of for the destruction that my lifestyle causes.
I put my comfort, my convienence and my conformity ahead of the lives and livelihoods of thousands of future generations, and I try not to think too much about my daily contribution to the destruction of the world that was left to me by thousands of past generations. I put myself far, far ahead of my ancestors and decendents and take from them for the most trivial of reasons.
I ignore the real human pain, suffering and death that my behaviour causes. I turn the page, switch the channel, and change the topic of conversation. I pretend that the science isn't definitive yet, or that there's no point in changing before others do, and I convince myself that 'scientists' will come up with a technological solution that will make my lifestyle and me OK.
I avoid, I deny, I justify and rationalise, I pretend, I project, I squirm and sqeeze and do whatever I can to maintain my concept of myself as a good person while still doing what I do. I evade my moral responsibility a day at a time in the hope that reality will somehow be different tomorrow morning.
I steal from those who live far away from me, and who I do not know because I see their pain as cartoon pain, and not fully real. I casually destroy what future generations will depend upon to live because they have yet to be born and it is only me, and my time and my normalcy that is important.
I am like those who, sixty years ago, did their jobs and lived their normal lives and didn't ask questions about where their jewish neighbours had gone. I am like those who participated in slavery and other atrocities, except that the effects of my crimes will outlast all those others.
And it is OK, because today I am normal, and busy, and have other things on my mind and, if what I do is really so bad so many people wouldn't be doing the same, would they?
But when, in the hours before I die, I think back upon my life and what it has meant, I must do one thing. I must hope and hope and pray and pray that there is nothing beyond life and beyong time and beyond myself, that there is no blance, no karma, no morality and no justice.
Because if there is, and I do what I do, knowing what I know.... Well, lets not think about that.

This week I went to Koln, to personally view two basketballmatches of the NBA Europe Live Tour, featuring the Phoenix Suns and Philadelphia 76ers.. The event took place in the Kolnarena, with a max. capacity of 20,000 as close as you can get in Europe to an NBA size stadium. My buddy and me had a great time, behaved like the real deal, bought the jerseys, drank the 50cl pints of beer, and eyed the cuties that were present at the time. The only bummer was the trip back in the bus, with no legroom, arriving at 4.30AM. And having to get up at 6.30AM wasn't a picknick either.

LONDEN - Zelfs kinderdromen worden tegenwoordig duur betaald. Om als mascotte het veld op te lopen met de spelers van Everton dient men bijna 5300 euro te betalen. Everton is weliswaar de duurste, maar lang niet de enige club in de Britse Premier League waar de ouders van de kinderen moeten betalen. Slechts bij zeven van de twintig topteams is het gewoon nog een aardig gebaar. Daaronder zijn Liverpool, Arsenal en Manchester United. Bij kampioen Chelsea moet wel worden betaald, maar in tegenstelling tot het peperdure imago van de club valt het bedrag hier nog mee: 260 euro.
Het slimst is Tottenham Hotspur van Martin Jol, dat iedere speler met een kind aan de hand het veld op laat rennen. Afhankelijk van de tegenstander dient dan 300 tot 450 euro per kind te worden neergeteld, zo meldt het blad 'The Sunday Times'.
De clubs verdedigen hun praktijken door erop te wijzen dat er van alles vastzit aan het meelopen met de sterren. Zo krijgen familieleden gratis kaartjes, is er voor de wedstrijd een maaltijd, worden er foto's gemaakt, is er een rondleiding door het stadion en mogen de spelertjes het tenue houden.

In Israël is beroering ontstaan over de stafchef van het leger, generaal Dan Halutz. Die heeft aandelen verkocht net voor de gevechten in Libanon onder zijn leiding losbarstten, meldde de krant Maariv. Hij verkocht zijn aandelen op 12 juli, drie uur na de ontvoering van twee Israëlische soldaten door de Hezbollah, op het moment dat de Israëlische artillerie stellingen van Hezbollah begon te bestoken. Op 12 en 13 juli ging de belangrijkste index op de beurs van Tel Aviv 8,3 procent achteruit. De generaal, die door Maariv wordt geciteerd, geeft toe dat hij de transactie heeft gesloten voor een bedrag van 120.000 shekels (26.000 euro). Bij de beursjongens van Goldman Sachs ging waarschijnlijk een belletje rinkelen van zodra de ene na de andere Israëlische bobo zijn verkooporders doorgaf. A Geordie woman has apparently developed foreign accents after waking up following a stroke. Linda Walker awoke in hospital to find her distinctive Newcastle accent had been transformed into a mixture of Jamaican, Canadian and Slovakian. The 60-year-old may have Foreign Accent Syndrome, where patients speak differently after a brain injury.
Researchers at Oxford University have found that patients with Foreign Accent Syndrome have suffered damage to tiny areas of the brain that affect speech.
The result is often a drawing out or clipping of the vowels that mimic the accent of a particular country, such as Spain or France, even though the sufferer has limited exposure to that accent.
The syndrome was first identified during World War II, when a Norwegian woman suffered shrapnel damage to her brain. She developed a strong German accent, which led to her being ostracised by her community.

In 1984, on Friday the 13th, Terry Wallace, then 19 years old, and a friend were involved in a major car accident in Mountain View, Arkansas. Terry's passenger was killed while Terry suffered major injuries and was found comatose. Terry's wife and 1 month old daughter waited, hoping he would recover quickly. The family carried him home from the Stone County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and back during the next 19 years hoping Terry would regain consciousness.

Afgelopen donderdagnacht vond de jaarlijkse NBA draft plaats waarbij de ploegen die laagst geëindigd zijn in het voorbije seizoen, mogen kiezen uit de nieuwe lichting basketbaltalent, meestal afkomstig uit de Amerikaanse high schools of colleges. Maar dit jaar - en dit is bij mijn weten de eerste keer - werd een Europese speler gekozen als Nr.1 pick. Het gaat om de Italiaanse Bargnani,21j, 6ft.11inches, ongeveer 2.10m. Eigenlijk zegt de Nr.1 status nog niet veel want de eerste 5 zijn aan elkaar gewaagd qua talent en de uiteindelijke rangschikking hangt ook af van welke ploeg eerst kiest. Zo koos Toronto voor Bargnani omdat hij een goede aanvulling is bij hun jonge kern (Chris Bosh en Charlie Villanueva). GM van Toronto is Bryan Colangelo die vorig jaar vertrok bij de Phoenix Suns en met een neus voor internationale spelers. Bij Phoenix haalde hij bijv. Boris Diaw, Leandro Barbosa, Amare Stoudemire (wel VS natuurlijk) en Steve Nash binnen. Niet slecht.

D'ollanders liggen er vroeger uit dan ik gedacht had. Ze hebben zelf door hun onnodig harde fouten in de beginfase de kiem gezaaid voor hun nederlaag en de 16 gele kaarten. De stamp op het dijbeen van Ronaldo verdiende rood. Sneijder en Vandervaart halen duidelijk niet het niveau van spelers zoals Seedorf,Davids of De Boer. Voetballiefhebbers herinneren zich wellicht de voetbalwedstrijd België-Brazilië van het WK2002. De scheids keurde toen een geldig kopbaldoelpunt van Wilmots af en onthield ons zo van een reële kans op een historische overwinning tegen de sambavoetballers. Herinner je dat wrange gevoel dat je daaraan overhield? Datzelfde gevoel heeft zich nu van me meester gemaakt omdat de Dallas Mavericks bestolen werden in deze Finals. Het begon al voor de series met de 6 daagse schorsing van 'onze' DJ Mbenga. En de schorsing in Game 5 van Stackhouse voor een doordeweekse 'no easy lay-up' fout op Shaq . Dwayne Wade (een fantastische speler, daar niet van) kreeg vanaf Game 3 systematisch hulp van de hoofdscheids bij zijn drives naar de ring. In Game 5&6 kreeg Wade van de refs op twee na evenveel vrijworpen als heel de ploeg van Dallas. Een neutrale basketfan in NY verwoordde het als volgt: "I think I farted twice on the couch during this series -- and I was called for two fouls against Dwyane Wade."

De macht van sponsors krijgt stilaan beangstigende trekjes. Voor de wedstrijd Holland-Ivoorkust moesten een aantal fans hun Oranje fanbroek , de Leeuwenhosen, uitdoen omdat het merk Bavaria niet voorkwam op de officiële sponsorlijst. En kenners beweren dat Ronaldo enkel speelt onder druk van de sponsor (Nike) en ook (te) vlug is moeten revalideren van zijn knieblessure op bevel van de sportgigant uit Oregon, USA.

'Ronaldo beweegt als een dikke pad' verwoordde Danny Blind het treffend na de eerste match van Brasil op het WK. Dat bracht me op het idee om een lijstje op te stellen met mijn favoriete dikke voetballers.

5. Jan Molby, sterkhouder bij Liverpool in de jaren '80. Zijn body contrasteerde vooral mooi met dat van superspits Ian Rush. Grobbelaar en Barnes waren ook van die figuren die je vandaag te weinig ziet in het moderne voetbal.

De belangrijkste sportgebeurtenis van het moment : WK of NBA ? ik ben bevooroordeeld dus laat ik maar beide becommentariëren in deze weblog.

Dallas-Miami staat na gisteren gelukkig 2-1 want anders was de Finals voorbij (4 winnende matchen) voor hij goed en wel begonnen was. Dirk Nowitzki zet de volgende stap naar wereldfaam en wordt in de VS zelfs vergeleken met Larry 'Legend' Bird en dat wil wat zeggen gezien het yankeechauvinisme. We maken ook de val mee van Shaquille O'Neal , zijn leeftijd (34j) begint duidelijk te wegen.
Over gewicht gesproken, heb je Ronaldo gezien gisteren? Wat een afgang, hij liep bijna even traag als Walter Baseggio ;) eigenlijk speelde Brazilië 2/3 van de match met 10 tegen 11. Rubinho stond er pas een paar minuten op en zorgde ei zo na voor een goal. Ik denk niet dat we den 'dikken' nog terugzien dit WK.

Ik sluit af met een paar rake one-liners van respectievelijk Shaquille O'Neal en Ronaldinho Gaucho (coole naam hé ;)

Enquête onder een duizendtal VTM kijkers: de kleine helft vindt dat het VB geen enkele verantwoordelijkheid draagt in de Antwerpse schietpartij. Dit resultaat mag niemand verwonderen en spreekt boekdelen over de doorsnee VTM kijker. De onverwoestbare populariteit van het VB brengt mij op een idee ('a cunning plan') Om de desastreuze kijkcijfers van Robland wat op te krikken , kan je VanOudenhoven vervangen door Rob Verreycken (a.k.a. 'rob-klopterop') en een modelstaat op VB leest maken i.p.v. dat softe gedoe nu.

In Robland is vendelzwaaien de nationale sport, verbreken we alle handelsrelaties met ons communistisch buurland Wallonië, wordt het recht op wapendracht in de grondwet opgenomen en houden we wekelijks een nationale boekverbranding.

Minister van Cultuur wordt Paul Beliën, Annemans op justitie, Johan Demol op Binnenlandse Zaken, Francis Vandeneynde op Buitenlandse Zaken en 'Eva Braun' Morel op Economie/begroting.Het Departement Sociale Zaken wordt afgeschaft wegens te links en overbodig. Alle straathoekwerkers moeten verplicht in Vlaanderen's 3 nieuwe kerncentrales gaan werken. Alexandra Coolen wordt Minister van Gezinszaken en voert een wet in die lijfstraffen in scholen verplicht maakt. Dedecker wordt Minister van Sport en wijst 95% van zijn budget toe aan gevechtssporten (de andere 5% gaat naar vendelzwaaien).
Alle bedrijfsleiders die het Warande manifest ondertekenden en het VB sponsorden, krijgen de volledige eigendom van de nog te privatiseren delen van de samenleving (bv. NMBS, gezondheidszorg, onderwijs) en de verdeling van deze inboedel gebeurt door Feryn van Feryn Kantelpoorten.

Ik mis mijn DENG

Sinds DENG is opgedoekt, lacht er niemand meer met het kapsel van Christophe Vekeman. Dit geeft de jonge god van de Vlaamse literatuur nieuwe energie. Dit weekend was hij in DM nog de vloer aan het vegen met de immer bescheiden kunstenaar (sic) Jan Decock (look who's calling who arrogant?)en woensdagavond zag ik hem op Morgen Beter. Een programma dat hard probeert om een boeiende talkshow te zijn maar er zelden in slaagt. De gasten waren (naast onze Christophe)Etienne Vermeersch, Kristien Hemmerechts en de opgezwollen beursnerd Paul Dhoore. Het onderwerp was de verloning van topmanagers. Christophe zat er heel verveeld bij en zei dat de verloning de gewone mensen inderdaad de ogen uitsteekt maar tegelijk noemde hij Vandelanotte een demagoog.
Ik schrok me een aap zo groot als Jan Decock's ego wanneer Vermeersch (die meestal twee minuten achter was op zijn gesprekspartners) het volgende zei: 'we zitten in een fundamenteel amoreel , soms ronduit immoreel systeem maar er valt gewoon niks aan te doen'. Waarop Kristien zei: 'Redelijk fatalistisch voor een ethicus'. Ik dacht niet dat ik dit ooit zou schrijven, maar KRISTIEN RULED!
Conclusies:
- Vermeersch moet dringend op pensioen als opiniemaker
- de moderatoren van Morgen Beter moeten dringend op stage bij Jeroen Pauw
- Paul Dhoore moet dringend op dieet
- Christophe Vekeman moet dringend naar de kapper.

Wat mij het meest frappeerde aan alle commentaar op de brutale roofmoord in het Centraal Station is het feit dat de meeste (of de luidste) commentatoren zo enorm geobsedeerd zijn door de etnische afkomst van de dader. Het zal de ouders van het slachtoffer niet veel uitmaken of hun zoon door een Vlaming, Waal, Noord-Afrikaan of Pool met zigeunerbloed werd ontnomen.

Naarmate de economische globalisering tastbaarder wordt, en de wereld meer één dorp (of beter : één shopping mall) wordt, gaat men zich hier meer en meer blind staren op je etnische afkomst. Verhofstadt weigert om sociologische redenen te zoeken achter dergelijke moorden, terwijl dat wel ruim ondersteund wordt door wetenschappelijk onderzoek, maar de associatie misdaad - ras dat kan er wel lekker door.

Er staat vanalles op: triphop (eat your heat out Alex Callier), UK acid jazz, cool souljazz, backpackhiphop en goed gedoseerde scratches. Grote klasse . I can't wait to see them live.

Effe dimmen met die liberalisering

Ruim twee derde van de Nederlandse bevolking (69 procent) wil dat het huidige beleid van liberalisering wordt afgezwakt. De verzelfstandiging van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen moet volgens 63 procent zelfs worden teruggedraaid. Ruim de helft (54 procent) wil dat de privatisering van de energiesector ongedaan wordt gemaakt.

Het overnamebod van staalgigant Mittal op Arcelor zal waarschijnlijk succesvol blijken. Premier Verhofstadt is al aan het onderhandelen met Lakshmi Mittal zelf om garanties los te krijgen voor behoud van banen. Is Guy op de hoogte van wat zich afspeelde bij één van de vorige overnames van Mr. Mittal in de Europese staalindustrie?

In 1996 nam de firma Ispat, eigendom van Mittal, het noodlijdende Irish Steel over voor een symbolische pond, omdat het met £27mln aan schulden zat opgezadeld. Het bedrijf kon nog enkele jaren draaiende worden gehouden door genereuze overheidssubsidies. Uiteindelijk werd het in 2002 geliquideerd, met 400 werknemers op straat en tientallen miljoenen euro's schulden aan crediteuren. De terreinen liggen er zwaar vervuild bij, met radioactieve en andere schadelijke afvalstoffen. Nu de leasecontracten vervallen zijn, mag de Ierse staatskas opdraaien voor de opkuis. John Mulvihill, een lokale politicus verwoordde de passage van Mr. Mittal als volgt: “ISPAT bought the plant for £1, got grants of millions, made money out of the plant and then walked away after five years with a fat wallet.”

The health of thousands of NHS patients could be at risk and one woman is reported to have died as a result of problems with the privatisation earlier this month of the NHS home oxygen supply service.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Health (DoH) described as "a sad case" the death of Alice Broderick, 63, from Carlisle after reports that her oxygen delivery from one private provider came too late to help her overcome breathing difficulties at her home.

Mrs Broderick died last week, reportedly after waiting in vain for six hours for an emergency oxygen delivery. A supply was only delivered to her home after she had been rushed to hospital, where she later died.

The DoH admitted last night that the transfer to four private companies of the service which delivers supplies to patients' homes has resulted in a shortage of oxygen. Around 60,000 patients in the UK rely on deliveries of oxygen to their homes, which have been hit by the transfer of supplies to the new privately managed Home Oxygen Service at the start of this month.

The privatisation plan was announced last summer by health minister Jane Kennedy who said patients would enjoy "round the clock access to expert advice and support in making the best use of the latest equipment".

Iedereen naar de beurs!!!

Het rusthuis Trebor in Tamines (bij Namen) wil nog voor de zomer een notering op de beurs , om op termijn een keten van rusthuizen op te starten.
Het is te hopen dat dat niet lukt gvd!! Dat de SPa daar eens tegen fulmineert i.p.v. die halfbakken en fake 'wij zijn de boeman van de olie-industrie en komen op voor de kleine man' houding. Stelletje poserende salon-socialisten!
Sommige zaken moeten uit de verderfelijke marktwerking worden gehouden en gezondheidszorg is één daarvan. Beste bewijs is de V.S.: meest geprivatiseerd en toch met voorsprong voor de overheid de duurste gezondheidszorg ter wereld, die alleen de rijken kunnen betalen. Zo wordt bijv. nog amper natuurlijk bevallen aldaar simpelweg omdat er een hogere 'operationele marge' gehaald wordt op een keizersnede. Het is niet belangrijk wat het beste is voor de patiënt , wel wat meest opbrengt voor het ziekenhuis en de verzekeraar in kwestie.
Er zijn paralellen te trekken tussen het Faust verhaal en de vele bedrijven die het noodzakelijk achten om naar de beurs te stappen. Eens binnen heb je niks meer te vertellen en wordt de hebzucht van je aandeelhouders de enige motivator van al je bedrijfsbeslissingen.

Twee voorbeelden van afgelopen week illustreren dat prima. De Amerikaanse technologiebedrijven Intel en Yahoo! lieten voor het afgelopen boekjaar een winstgroei van respectievelijk 19 en zelfs 125 procent zien, en werden beiden afgestraft op de beurs omdat ze toch niet voldeden aan de verwachtingen van analisten.
Stel u nu eens het volslagen ondenkbare voor: dat die winstgroei gewoon nul procent zou bedragen. Beeld u eens in dat zo'n bedrijf exact evenveel winst zou maken als vorig jaar, of misschien zelfs een beetje minder. In beurstermen zou dat een regelrechte catastrofe zijn, met een aandeel dat in vrije val gaat en wellicht een topman die de deur wordt gewezen. In objectieve termen zou Intel nog steeds 7,5 miljard dollar hebben verdiend bovenop hetzelfde bedrag dat het bedrijf vorig jaar binnenhaalde. Voor Yahoo! zou dat 840 miljoen dollar zijn. Mooi, toch? Om die redenering door te trekken: waarom zou zo'n bedrijf eens geen winst mogen maken die minder bedraagt, bijvoorbeeld slechts de helft van die van vorig jaar, omdat het eventjes wat minder gaat of omdat er zwaar is geïnvesteerd? Moet toch kunnen?
Stel je voor dat iedere middenstander of kleine zelfstandige ook zo begint te redeneren.

1. Minister Dewael zegt dat wie illegalen helpt een misdrijf pleegt. Voorts noemt hij de houding van de kiezers 'heel dubbel' want 'enerzijds vinden ze dat ze allemaal weg moeten, behalve als het om de eigen buren gaat'. En wat vindt Patrickske de belangrijkste evolutie van 2005 in de eindejaarsvraagjes van Humo ?: 'dat in de hoofdstad van Europa en van ons land nog steeds mensen op straat sterven van kou en ontbering, en het groeiende besef dat zoiets onaanvaardbaar is.'

Nuff said.

Veel minder zendtijd en krantenpagina's worden besteed aan de horror in Congo daarentegen. In 'The Lancet' verscheen een rijtje bloedstollende cijfers: sinds 1998 zijn er 4 miljoen Congolezen gedood tijdens de burgeroorlog, het equivalent van de Waalse bevolking, of twee tsoenami's per jaar geconcentreerd in 1 land. Binnen 5 jaar zullen de bobo's van de EU en VN wellicht over elkaars voeten vallen om zich te excuseren en te beloven dat 'dit nooit meer zal gebeuren' net zoals ze een paar jaar terug deden in Rwanda.

4. Rusland - Oekraïne: it's a gas, gas , gas….
Beiden hebben boter op hun hoofd ; dit is een goeie 'appraisal' van de situatie door de Guardian:
'Energy prices are high globally because demand is strong and there are justifiable concerns about supply in the short and medium-term. It is absurdly wasteful and damaging to the environment for the Russians to sell gas at subsidised prices. From the perspective of anybody concerned about global warming, the idea that Ukraine should be receiving gas at one-fifth of the price it costs in western Europe and an eighth of what it costs in the US is the economics of the madhouse.'

Is iedereen blind? Het ligt er toch bovenarms op dat Freya goed wist wat ze zei tijdens het interview van Vrij Nederland en even goed wat de reactie ging zijn. Indien ze zich enkel had gehouden aan inhoudelijke kritiek had niemand het opgemerkt. Nu hebben de mensen ook gehoord dat het beleid van het kabinet Balkenende zowel economisch als ethisch behoorlijk rechts is*. 'Don't hate the media, play the media' is Freya's motto.

- Gerrit Zalm , de ongelooflijk arrogante Min. V. Financiën, is de lagere en middenklasse aan het uitzuigen dat zelfs demente Maggie Thatcher er jaloers op is.
- Gezondheidszorg wordt geschoeid op Amerikaanse leest, d.w.z. minder efficiënt en toch stukken duurder.
- Wanneer uitgeprocedeerde asielzoekers teruggestuurd worden naar land/hel van herkomst, wordt doodleuk meegedeeld aan de regering in kwestie dat de 'asielzoekers' terug zijn. Haal die testikelklemmen alvast maar uit de kast, sergeant!

Tot slot dit: heb je een Nederlandse politicus van de CDA of VVD al eens een interview zien geven in het journaal? Geen jota snap je van wat die gozers zeggen, en vooral niet op de vraag antwoorden hé. Dan mogen wij nog van geluk spreken dat we kleurrijke politici hebben. In Vlaanderen zou Pim Fortuyn Johnny Sjans heten en zou hij een onbekende backbencher zijn die misschien al eens een wetsvoorstel voor homo-adoptie heeft mee ondertekend. En bovendien zou hij nog leven.

In a recent trip to China, U.S. President Bush appealed to Beijing to improve religious freedom, but as usual his comments reveal favoritism.
His most cited quotes : 'May God bless the Christians in China' and 'My hope is that the government of China will not fear Christians who gather to worship openly'.
What about the other religions being clandestinely practiced in China? Is President Bush tacitly condoning the persecution of China's many Buddhists, muslims, followers of Falun Gong, and other non-Christian religions?

Since two weeks, my lovely wife has been hospitalized and last Thursday gave birth to two healthy boys, Leon & Just. Very exciting ofcourse , I can't wait until they can come home and we can be one big happy family again. For the last two weeks, I have been taking care of my other two kids, Arnout (nearly 5yrs) and Maurice (3yrs). The experience has been great but exhausting and I have gained a deeper insight in what it's like to be a single parent.
Most nights, I feel like something the cat dragged in; I am convinced it's tougher than being CEO of a big European bank because there is no delegating, outsourcing or outside consulting to do your work for you. There are no meetings which means you have to take the decisions yourself instead of 'per committee' and you can't go looking for a scapegoat when something goes wrong. The financial rewards are shite (zero actually) and there is no army of dedicated followers nodding yes to every remark you make , no matter how stupid. Parenthood is the least hyped activity one can do (it's not even considered to be 'work') and still it's the most important job you will ever do.

A medical study in 1983 concluded that no matter how efficient the method of execution, a few seconds of pain is inevitable when losing one's head. The guillotine, considered one of the more "humane" methods, relies on severing the brain and spinal cord after cutting the surrounding tissues. Even so, at least two to three seconds of intense pain cannot be avoided. There are many accounts of the heads of executed people continuing to show movement or expression long after the final blow. One particularly gruesome experiment in 1905 involved a French physician who called out the name of the condemned man in the seconds after decapitation. The response was for the eyelids over the severed head to slowly lift up and then the pupils focused on the doctor before then slowly closing again. The doctor claimed that when he repeated the dead man's name, the same actions took place. It was only at the third attempt that the head gave no response. The exact of amount of pain of course relies on the proficiency of the executioner. When Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded in 1587, the axeman took three attempts to sever the head and even then had to finish the job with a knife.

I picked up an amusing concept on ESPN2.com , the UCR or Unintentional Comedy Rating.
This is a rating you give to people who are funny, without realizing it. For instance, in the eighties, the late Arafat, had a high UCR when he adressed the Tv cameras in his broken English. So did the late pope Karol Woijtila, when he said 'Dankoe foor de blumen' during his annual Urbi et Orbi speech.
In sports, the basketball players Dikembe Mutombo and DJ Mbenga, who were both born in Congo, have some of the highest UCR scores.

I was reminded of the stupidity of the human race when I was watching the world championship football for players aged 20 or under on Dutch television. Before the match Australia-Benin kicked off, there was a minute of silence for the deceased keeper of the Benin team. During the qualifying stages he was stoned to death after he had a bad game. What's all the negativism around the NO verdicts delivered by the French & the Dutch in the EU constitution referenda? Some commentators are acting like we're doomed. Wake up and smell the coffee! This is how democracy is supposed to work , not by ramming political decisions down people's throats. There is only so much change people can take in a certain amount of time. Let's see...
1999: a new currency; that's quite a huge change , affecting everybody's lives
2004: EU-15 becomes EU-25, former communist countries (some piss poor) join the club
2005: Turkey is about to join and a constitution of 480 pages is drafted
no wonder people voted for a time-out.
Did you know that the constitution contains passages minutely describing the wages and severance packages of the EU bureaucrats? Does that belong in a constitution?

The referenda will restore part of the public's lost confidence in politics and may benefit the political project called EU in the long run.

Researchers at Monsanto tested rats and covered that their GM MON 863, a modified corn already grown and eaten in the US and Canada, causes the rodents to develop kidney disease and low blood count . The results weren't supposed to come out and when they did, Monsanto dismissed the results as meaningless and due to chance, reflecting normal variations between rats.

I still would like some more testing done please, preferably by a third party, before the EU grants permission to sell Monsanto's products to my kids.

Six years ago Dr Arpad Pusztai , a British scientist and a GM fan, already found disturbing evidence that the GM potatoes he was studying damaged the immune systems, brains, livers and kidneys of rats. Wassup with this Spencer Tunick hype and the nude people he photographed in Bruges over the weekend? Every newsshow and paper had an item on it and especially women around 40 seem to find his 'art' very provocative, hip & interesting. I don't get it.
Tunick is a one-trick pony. Is it art simply because they're naked? If everybody wore fleshcoloured or white spandex jumpsuits would it still be considered as high art and more importantly: would the media cover it??

British commuters pay up to five times more than rail passengers on the Continent, a study has found.

While an annual season ticket from Hemel Hempstead to London costs £2,504 for a 23-mile journey, the equivalent would cost just £510 in Berlin.

The news emerges after the Government announced price increases above the inflation rate. On some London commuter routes up to one out of every four trains runs late. It is also thought that further increases are in the pipeline.

Bob Crow, the general secretary of the RMT, argued that the private companies involved in the rail network were siphoning off profit and ensuring that rail fares in Britain were higher than in most Continental countries. "The Rail privateers are taking out a billion pounds a year from the railways and £2m a week from the Tube - is it any wonder that commuters are paying through the nose for season tickets?" he said. "Commuters in countries where the railways remain in public hands pay a fraction of season ticket costs here. The time has come to draw the line under privatisation and bring our rail and Tube back into the public sector."

The DJ in Dan Steely (DJ Gaucho) dusted off the cobwebs of his SL1200s last week to perform on a partyboat in Ghent. Thx again to my DJ buddies (Curteez, Buddha and Bricken) for providing me with their hottest discs , which I needed badly since I spinned non-stop from 20.30h till 02.30h. I'm still feeling the aftermath (I forgot how physically demanding those DJ groupies can be :)

Now 4 something completely different:
The New Pope Papa Ratzi; doesn't he look kinda demonic, especially when he smiles, and his eyes are jeepy-creepy.If you ask me something went wrong when he conducted his last exorcism: the devil jumped bodies.
I think the Vatican picked a 78-year old cos they were pleasantly surprised by all the media attention (the OldPope/NewPope soap received a wider coverage than the Tsunami ; for real!)
They want to do the same thing every five years now (dominating the airwaves and selling loads of memorabilia) to keep their brandname alive.

Picanol: the dirty numbers.

Remember Patrick Coene, the ex-CEO of Picanol NV, who was paid roughly €25mln in three years on the job, which is about a quarter of Picanol's listed stock value?
Well, PriceWaterhouseCoopers finished their audit of the company and it seems that old Coene just took his cue from the owners of Picanol, the family Steverlynck, which he already knew from his college days at the Vlerick School.

Here is what De Tijd, the Belgian business newspaper reported on the audit which ran from 2001 to mid-2004 (11/03).

Annual wages (all gross amounts)

Patrick Steverlynck:620.000€
Michel Steverlynck: 322.000€
Yves Steverlynck: 174.000€
On top of this fixed payment they receive 3099€ per meeting of the Board of Directors plus a bonus dependent on Picanol's results.

Now comes the really disgusting part, the personal expenses of the family paid for by
Picanol: a whopping total of 1,227 million € (yes that's 1.2bln€) including 220.000€ for hunting trips (that's a lot of duckshooting!). Patrick also receives €300.000 per year for the 'accueil' of customers in his mansion. (Note: he pays Picanol a ridiculously low rent of €327 per month for the stately mansion)
€150.000/year for the house of the elderly Emmanuel Steverlynck (who lives in another house in Switzerland by the way).

Last week the new CEO Van Nevel announced that workers would receive a one time gross amount of €250 + two extra holidays to compensate for all the hassle surrounding the company and the PwC audit. Wow, thanks very much. That didn't make me puke yet, but the reaction of the labour unions at Picanol caused me to regurgitate my lunch stante pede.

The spokesmen of the so-called socialist ABVV and the christiandemocratic ACV both hoped that the newsstories surrounding the Steverlyncks would not cause their departure because they are necessary for keeping jobs. Unbelievable!!!!!

Who will foot the bill for this fraud? (which in all likelihood will not be punished as harshly as the social fraud hated so badly by Rik Daems )
1. the employees (who are worried about their job and who haven't seen any decent pay hikes in ages).
2. the shareholders (although I only feel sympathy for the smalltime investor)
3. last but not least the taxpaying citizens.(Picanol can deduct the €1.2bln from their profits and they don't have to pay VAT (=BTW) on those amounts).

Ofcourse the mainstream media wants you to believe that Picanol is an anomaly (just like Enron, WorldCom, Parmalat etc). All the other family-owned companies are squeeky clean!!

At our workplace we can read the Financial Times. Some of the stuff in there is quite funny, like this excerpt from today's issue.

"The news that Paul Wolfowitz, the US deputy defence secretary and neo-conservative hawk, is a leading contender to head the World Bank has sent a frisson of fear down the spines of development experts across the globe.
So great is the predicted backlash that one might almost suspect he is only there to secure Europe's acquiescence to a rival candidate.

It also points to a worrying trend. Wolfowitz would not be the first Pentagon alumnus to go from bombing bridges to building them. In 1968 Robert McNamara, Lyndon B. Johnson's defence secretary, went straight from spearheading the Vietnam conflict to a lengthy stint as bank president.

And Wolfowitz's regime change policy could work wonders: instead of vainly trying to alter the approach of corrupt rulers, why not simply topple them?
There is the thorny issue of whether the World Bank's charter precludes such direct political action as, say, invasion. No doubt Alberto Gonzales, the US attorney-general, will find a way round it: perhaps by dubbing the interventions "coercive aid projects" rather than combat operations.

The Human Polar Bear

I take the train to work every weekday and there is one guy I see on the platform who is freaking me out big time.
He's the first human being I know who wears exactly the same clothes in the summer as he does in the winter. For several days now it's been freezing: at 7.00am this morning I reckon that the 'feel' temperature must have been something like -10°C (officially it was -4°C today but this doesn't factor in the chilly wind). Everybody is wearing a heavy coat or anorak, mittens and hats and still shivering like hell, but the guy - I call him the Polar Bear - is wearing a shirt with the top unbuttoned and a flimsy blazer and that's it! What really scares me is that he never flinches even when a gust of Arctic wind rips across the train platform in Deinze.

P.S.: He drives a huge Mercedes to the train station (which also seems kind of strange)so he can't be too poor to buy winterclothes. I hope I can gather the courage to talk to him one of these days and ask him what his secret is.

Corporations in the U.S. and elsewhere have rarely had it this good.
In 2004, after-tax corporate profits in the U.S rose to 14% as a proportion of GDP, the highest for 75 years and in Europe and Japan, corporate profits are the highest in 25 years. That's why you see so many big corporations paying out huge dividends to their shareholders and even buying in their own shares on the stock market. Big banks with pockets full of money like HSBC and Citigroup are looking to use their cash reserves to buy up competitors, probably sparking another wave of 'wealth-creating' mergers (numerous studies have shown that over 70% of big mergers turn out to be economically unprofitable)
What's the problem, you say, this must be good for the economy as a whole, since the employees surely also benefit.
Well, actually they don't. Officially, U.S. corporate profits have risen 60% over the past 3 years, opposed to 10% for wage income. But this does not take into account the fact that extralegal benefits such as healthcare and pension plans have been slashed over the last few years. In certain areas, wages have actually fallen (NYTimes 28/02/05: 'Last year, the real wages of hourly workers, who make up about 80 percent of the work force, actually dropped for the first time in more than a decade')
The economic theory goes that eventually these higher corporate profits will be syphoned away to the pockets of workers through lower prices as firms compete with each other to grab market share. The problem is that in most sectors, there is a concentration in the making that will lead to less competition, not more.
When you confront a neoliberal economist with a real, actual problem or negative side-effect of the capitalist economy, he always produces the economic theories of Adam Smith, Milton Friedman or Hayek: don't regulate and the problem will work itself out. But they never say how long it is going to take and also conveniently forget to mention that the many assumptions of the classic economic theories (perfect information, perfect competition...) are never fullfilled in the real world.
I have a question for the rightwingers in the U.S.; why is the evolution theory by Darwin only a theory and why are the theories of Smith, Friedman, Hayek considered to be laws of nature???

Wood pulp used to produce various kinds of paper has become China's third largest import after petroleum and steel... Barroso and many fellow politicians (Bolkestein, Blair, McCreevy, Verheugen, Kroes, Van Rompuy, Daems, Berlusconi , Balkenende, the list goes on & on) want the European labor market to take their cue from the U.S. because it's much more dynamic and flexible. After all, the official unemployment rate in the euro area is 8.8% , compared to only 5.5% in the U.S .However, the official figures are painting a rosier picture than the actual job market situation:

the number of Americans without a job for more than 6 months has more than doubled over the past 3 yrs to 1.6mln
the share of unemployed without work for more than 6 months has stayed above 20% for the past 18 months.
The U.S. manufacturing sector has lost 2.8mln jobs over the last year
Since spring 2003 the average duration of unemployment is 19 weeks, the longest since 1948!!
5.5% is the official unemployment rate but over 12% of Americans live below the poverty line; many people need to take up 2 or even 3 jobs to keep their heads above water, they are called the 'working poor'.

Economic liberals rightly claim that it is not fair if people are on welfare and they don't have to work because they live off the fruits of labor of all the others. But what about all those people who do work in the U.S. and who are still poor? Isn't that even less fair??

Nuclear energy

Politicians in Europe have put nuclear reactors back on the agenda now that Kyoto has gone into effect. Granted, a nuclear reactor does not emit CO2 but it happens to produce an even more lethal byproduct for mother Earth. Until he/she can answer the following questions, no politician is allowed to discuss the relaunch of the nuclear industry in my vicinity!

What are you going to do with the millions of tons of nuclear waste, with its cute radioactivity that lasts for a kazillion years? Oh, and shooting it into space is not an option.
What if uranium runs out in say 50 years?
Do you really want to have nuclear reactors spread out all over the European mainland, offering an inviting canvas to airplane flying terrorists?

I wonder what the solar energy industry would look like today with the kind of funding the nuclear industry received over the past 50 years.

Nu dat Condoleezza Rice gepromoveerd is tot Minister v. Buitenlandse Zaken komt ze nog meer voor de camera's. Misschien ligt het aan mij, maar 'that woman scares me!'. Ze ziet eruit als een kruising tussen Rob de Nijs en Whoopi Goldberg. Ik verdenk haar ervan synthetische verjongingsdrankjes te nemen want ze lijkt 15 jaar jonger dan haar ware leeftijd (geb. 1954). Naar verluidt heeft ze een huizenhoog IQ waarmee ze baas geworden is van Stanford University vóór ze voor GWB ging werken.

Ze hebben natuurlijk wel wat slimme mensen nodig in het Witte Huis om het gemiddelde peil omhoog te trekken wanneer George thuis is. Zouden ze veel lachen met hem als hij er niet bij is?

Eigenlijk zouden ze ipv oorlog te voeren tussen naties op de ouderwetse manier, de zaken kunnen oplossen met kwisavonden, waarbij verschillende teams tegenover elkaar gaan zitten in het decor van de Pappenheimers. Maar dan wel met de huidige regeringen en niet met de beste kwissers van het land.

Die kerel van NoordKorea zou goed scoren in vragen over Hollywood, en Putin in vragen over de Berlijnse underground new wavescéne. Berlusconi weet alles over Frank Sinatra en Las vegas van zijn dagen als crooner op een cruise schip.

De Belgische regering zou haar mannetje staan me dunkt. Verhofstadt mag je alles vragen over sport en wijn. Vandelanotte en Landuyt zijn degelijke allround kwissers maar articuleren is de boodschap. Zeker in de finale. Aan Waalse zijde , zal het vooral moeten komen van Rudy Demotte. We kunnen winnen van Holland met onze vingers in de neus.

En wie gaat er de finale winnen denk je?
Mijn geld staat op Zweden.

Bij sommige passages moest ik zoveel lachen dat het pijn deed. En dat van een Amerikaan die niet Michael Moore heet! In de column geeft hij trouwens toe dat Dirk Nowitzki de MVP van het moment is in de NBA maar hij stelt ook dat een niet-Amerikaan niet kan in aanmerking komen voor de officiële MVP titel. Quelle chauvinisme. Stel je voor dat wij de Gouden Schoen telkens aan een Belg moeten geven.

Undercover marketing.

Nieuw voor mij dit begrip, undercover marketing. Het gaat om een marketingtechniek (in de VS natuurlijk, where else?)waarbij reclamebedrijven acteurs betalen om in de nabijheid van potentiêle consumenten te 'stoefen' met een produkt. Bij de lancering van een nieuw drankje (Blue Bull bijv.) worden een paar 'leaners' in een trendy club losgelaten, die aan de bar ostentatief vragen naar Blue Bull. De andere klanten kennen dit natuurlijk niet en informeren de 'leaners' naar het nieuwe drankje. Zo wordt er een hype gecreeërd en twee uur later drinkt de helft van de aanwezige fuivers Blue Bull.

Je zal natuurlijk zeggen dat het bij ons nog niet toegepast wordt maar ondertussen ben ik wel wantrouwig geworden van vreemden die in mijn buurt een produkt aanprijzen.

Hoi fellow bloggers,

de titel van deze blog is geïnspireerd door mijn favoriete TV-kwis 'QI' op BBC2. Als je het nog niet gezien hebt, zeker doen. Eén van de vragen betrof een experiment uitgevoerd door NASA op spinnen, meer bepaald onderzocht men wat er gebeurde wanneer je spinnen drugs toedient en dan een web laat weven. De resultaten zijn op zijn minst verrassend te noemen en kan je bekijken op www.missblackwidow.com/drugs.html. Vooral wijlen Timothy Leary zou trots zijn op het feit dat onder invloed van LSD, de spinnen quasi perfect geometrische webben weven. Het slordigste web (de vliegen lachten zich een breuk) kwam tot stand met caffeïne, de meest gebruikte drug in de wereld. Misschien moeten we die koffieautomaat op ons werk maar vervangen.

Nagedachte: welke drugs hebben ze uitgedeeld bij NASA dat ze op het idee komen om zoiets te onderzoeken?

Gegroet collega-bloggers.

Toen ik zoëven mijn allereerste blogaccount aan het aanmaken was, gebeurde er één van die dingen die de meeste mensen toeval zullen noemen, maar waar ik graag meer achter zie.

Mijn vrouw (de nieuwsgierige schat!)vroeg zich luidop af wat ik aan het doen was op de PC, waarop ik bekende een 'blog' te beginnen.
'Blog?' zei ze.
In een paar minuten vertelde ik haar het weinige wat ik weet over weblogs en hun groeiende populariteit. Tevreden met mijn uitleg, zette ze zich voor de TV en zapte naar Canvas, waar Phara de Aguirre een reportage over weblogs en hun groeiende populariteit inleidde. Echt gebeurd!
Now is that some Twilight Zone doodoo or what?

Ik had nergens gehoord of gelezen van de reportage op Canvas en ik aarzel al een paar maand om een blog te beginnen.

Meer heb ik niet te zeggen in mijn 'maiden post' ; vergeef me , ik ben nog wat verlegen.
